how did you get to st john?

by boat silly! (this is a question that all the "transplants" get asked ALL the time. we might start off saying "same way as you", but most people will tell you the rest of the story after they are done being a smartie pants.)

i came down here in 1999 after spending one too many dismal, sunless, cold, miserable winters in kalamazoo michigan. i figured i would spend a season down here and return to the "real world"....but one thing lead to another and now i'm going into my 10th year.

why do you like st john?
this answer could go on, and on, and on, but i'll give you a few reasons because i'm sure you have other things to do. (not in order of importance)

1. the climate and unmatchable beauty

2. the small size

3. small population, allows you to be familiar with everyone in your community

4. slow pace. this is a tricky one, because until you get used to the slow pace it can actually be very frustrating.

5. as crazy as you think you might be, it is really easy to find someone else on st john who is way crazier than you are.

6. your economic status has little to do with your social status. i've met so many people since i've lived here that i probably would never had the opportunity to in the states where how much money you have determines where you live, work, and "hang out". on st john you can see people who are multi millionaires sitting at the same bar as people who are essentially homeless.
